The origin of the First Saturday devotion

The room at Pontevedra, now a chapel, where Lucia received the request for the First Saturday Communions of Reparation, Dec. 10, 1925.

It was on this day, December 10, 1925, that Our Lady appeared to Lucia, the seer of Fatima, to request the First Saturday Communions of Reparation. Lucia was then a postulant at the Sisters of St. Dorothy convent in Pontevedra, Spain, having just arrived there in October after several years as a student at the Institute of Arcediago Van Zeller in Porto, Portugal.

Our Lady had promised in the July 1917 apparition at Fatima that she would return to ask for this devotion, along with the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. On the evening of December 10, Lucia was in her room, “when suddenly the room lit up and it was the light of my dear Mother in Heaven who came with the Child Jesus on a luminous cloud. Our Lady, as if wanting to instill courage, rested her hand on my shoulder, and as she did so, showed me her Immaculate Heart encircled by thorns which she was holding in her other hand.

“The Child Jesus said: ‘Have compassion on the Heart of your most holy Mother, covered with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them.’

“Then Our Lady said: ‘Look, my daughter, at my Heart surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.’”

Lucia wrote in her diary, “After this grace, how could I keep myself from the least sacrifice that God asks of me to console the Heart of my beloved Mother in Heaven, happy that Mary depletes the bitter drops of the Chalice.”

This request, she said, was not just for her, but for every person who would listen and live it. The regular monthly practice of the First Saturday devotion atones for the sins of those who blaspheme against the Immaculate Heart of Mary and are in danger of hell because of these sins. Our Lord clarified to Lucia the five ways people blaspheme against the Immaculate Heart:  1) Against her Immaculate Conception; 2) Against her perpetual virginity; 3) Against her divine maternity, refusing at the same time to accept her as Mother of all mankind; 4) Those who publicly implant in the hearts of children indifference, disrespect and even hate against the Immaculate Mother; 5) Those who insult her directly in her sacred images.
