The mysterious night sky that forewarned a terrible war

In the July apparition, Our Lady predicted: “The war is going to end; but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that He is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine and persecutions of the Church and the Holy Father.”

On the night of Jan. 25, 1938, there appeared what was described as a “huge blood-red beam of light emblazoned in the sky.” After much study, scientists came to agree that this display did not fit into the pattern of an aurora borealis. An aurora usually displays streaks of light, whereas this display filled the whole sky with a red glow. An aurora is usually seen best in artic regions, whereas this was witnessed as far south as Spain, Portugal, Bermuda and Florida.

The Daily Telegraph, a British paper, reported on this event the next day, describing how “the sky was illumined by a crimson glow which deepened to violet” over a large part of Europe, including Portugal. The New York Times similarly described how the “aurora” was seen even in Gibraltar and Bermuda.

Dr. Carl Stoermer of the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics in Oslo, Norway reported that throughout the exhibit there was a noise “similar to the sound of burning grass and brush” in contrast to the silence of an aurora borealis.

Londoners thought half the city was on fire. Switzerland firehouses were emptied of their equipment in response to many false alarms. In France, thousands of telephone calls asked whether “it was a fire, war or the end of the world.”

On the same night German General Von Blomberg, commander in chief of the Armed Forces and General Von Fritsch, commander in chief of the Army, being accused of false charges were both removed and several days later Adolph Hitler took over as commander in chief. Thus, Hitler not only had political control of the country but also military control.

Sister Lucia observed this strange light from her convent and informed the Bishop of Leiria about the importance of this sign and referred to it again in her third memoir: “Your Excellency is not unaware that, a few years ago, God manifested that sign, which astronomers chose to call an aurora borealis. I don’t know for certain, but I think if they investigated the matter, they would discover that, in the form in which it appeared, it could not possibly have been an aurora borealis. Be that as it may, God made use of this to make me understand that His justice was about to strike the guilty nations. For this reason, I began to plead insistently for the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays, and the consecration of Russia. My intention was to obtain mercy and pardon, not only for the whole world, but for Europe in particular.”

Next Saturday, Feb. 2, is a First Saturday. This devotion of mercy and reparation is still very much needed in the world. Please take up this practice in your life for the salvation of souls.
