The Forgotten Message of Fatima

by Donal Anthony Foley –

Our Lady promised as part of the secret revealed to the children at Fatima in July 1917, that she was going to come back to ask for the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays. These two things would help prevent the fearful problems in the world that would develop if mankind did not stop sinning.

Regrettably, as we all know, mankind has not stopped sinning and in fact it could be argued that the moral situation of the world is a thousand times worse than it was a century ago – certainly as regards sexual morality.

In any event, Our Lady did return, and appeared to Sr. Lucia in her cell on Thursday, December 10 1925, at Pontevedra in Spain, where the Fatima seer, who was now 18, had become a postulant with the Sisters of St. Dorothy. Lucia tells us that Our Lady rested her hand on her shoulder, while showing her a heart encircled by thorns in her other hand. The Child Jesus then spoke: “Have pity on the Heart of your Most Holy Mother. It is covered with the thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to remove them with an act of reparation.”

The Blessed Mother then revealed the act of reparation that would remove them, the First Saturday Communions of Reparation, promising “to assist at the hour of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months go to confession and receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”

While the consecration of Russia, which was accomplished by Pope St John Paul II in 1984, was essentially the concern of the hierarchy, the First Saturdays devotion is mainly meant to be carried out by the priests and laity of the Church.  This is one of the crucial things that Our Lady asked for, and it is of great benefit not only to the individual believer who carries out the First Saturdays devotion, but also on a wider scale when enough people practice this devotion as a means of reparation for sin, and of drawing down God’s graces on the world.

In November 2014, the World Apostolate of Fatima International President, Prof. Américo Pablo Lopez Ortiz, met with Pope Francis in Rome for the Third World Congress of Ecclesial Movements and New Communities.  He personally handed Pope Francis an eight-page petition on behalf of the World Apostolate of Fatima International asking him to establish the First Saturdays devotion in the Universal Church. He also spoke to the Pope about this devotion, which he described as “the forgotten part of the Message of Fatima.”

Prof. Américo explained to the Holy Father that the universal practice of the First Saturdays devotion is a condition associated with world peace, the conversion of many sinners, the grace of final perseverance for those practicing it, and also for the necessary unity and strength of the Universal Church – and that it will ultimately lead on to the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary as she promised at Fatima.

In fact, what really needs to happen is that the First Saturdays devotion assumes a similar status to the Divine Mercy devotion, that is, it is recommended and approved by the Church. Once that happens, and Catholics take it more seriously, then we will really see changes begin to happen.

And we can say that the two devotions really go together since the ultimate aim of both, in a physical sense, is world peace – as Christ said to St. Faustina, “Mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to My mercy.”

In March 1939, on the eve of the Second World War, Sr. Lucia said, “World war or world peace depends on the practice of the devotion of the first Saturdays as well as the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary; that is why I wish for its propagation and most of all because that is Our Lord’s will and also our dearest Heavenly Mother’s.”

If this is the means by which the evils of the world today will be overcome, then it is of the utmost urgency that Catholics everywhere take what Our Lady said seriously and practice and promote the First Saturdays devotion as much as possible.

  1. The consecration was not done in 1984 or since. He consecrated the world, not Russia.

    • He consecrated the world, because as Jesus revealed to Sister Lucia, the consecration would be done late, but it would be done. Pope John Paul II understood that by 1984, the errors of Russia had spread around the world, and therefore, he consecrated the whole world, and paused to pray specifically for Russia. Sister Lucia, when asked what to expect, said, “Look to the East.” You cannot deny what happened just a year later when Mikhail Gorbachev became president and began to implement freedoms, which led to the end of the atheistic Communist Party in 1991. After 70 years, three generations of people unable to pass on the faith to their children, atheism was fully entrenched in the Soviet Union. This does not change overnight. As many in Russia have said, the chaos that they endured after the freedoms were initiated, they did not know who God was. They were starting from ground zero. Today, churches are thriving and people are finding their way to God. Conversion is happening in the children of atheistic parents and grand parents, which in itself is a miracle of God’s grace.

  2. How can a person observe the First Saturdays devotion when there is no Mass on Saturday except for the vigil mass Saturday night which I am unable to attend? Would it be sufficient to watch Mass on Saturday on television and follow the other rules?

    • You may offer your Communion at the vigil Mass on Saturday for the First Saturday devotion. You may also offer your Communion at the Mass on Sunday for the intention of First Saturday, if no other option is available.

  3. I would put it forward that the Consecration has NOT been done. Our Lady said Russia was to be mentioned, and EVERY Bishop in the world was to do it at the same time as the Pope. She also told the 3 children that when it was done, Russia would be converted, and the world would have a period of peace.

Our Lady also stated that when the Consecration was done the effects would be immediate so that all in the world would know that it came about ONLY due to the Consecration..

Has Russia converted? HARDLY. Is there peace in the world??? Not in my 58 years.

Therefore the Consecration didn’t take place. Should you bring up a incident where Sr. Lucia supposedly stated it was acceptable, I merely remind you of St. Pio, who, under the cover of obedience wrote and signed a paper that stated he was never punished by the Church, even though he was punished for decades through no fault of his own, at times not being allowed to say Mass publicly nor hear confessions. I have no doubt that Sr. Lucia would say anything if ordered under obedience.
