Sts. Peter and Paul: Examples of Faith & Conversion

Today the Church celebrates the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Simon Peter was the first of the Apostles to acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.  When asked, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”  This Divinely inspired answer showed that Peter would lead The Twelve after Our Lord ascended into Heaven.  “Thou art Peter, the Rock, and upon this Rock I will build My Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” St. Peter went to Rome and established the Church there, becoming its first Pope. Martyred in 64AD, he was crucified upside-down at his request, stating he was not worthy to die as Our Lord did.

Saul was a Jewish Pharisee. He persecuted the early Christians in Jerusalem. On the road to Damascus where he was traveling to engage in the persecution of the Christians there, he was blinded by a great light and thrown from his horse. There he heard the Lord say, “Saul, Saul why do you persecute Me?”  He came to realize that Jesus was the Messiah. St. Paul became the apostle to the Gentiles and wrote many of the letters to the early Church, which make up much of the New Testament.  In Rome stands the Church of St. Paul of the Three Fountains, Tre Fontani. This is the place where he was beheaded by order of the Emperor Nero in the year 67AD. His head bounced three times after his decapitation, and on those spots three fountains arose.

Saints Peter and Paul pray for us to have the zeal and strength to fight the pagan world today as you did 2,000 years ago.

Thou art a priest for life in the order of Melchizedek
Joseph and Georg Ratzinger

Sixty-five years ago today on June 29, 1951, two brothers from Bavaria were ordained to the Holy Priesthood.  Josef and Georg Ratzinger came of age during a most tumultuous time in Germany.  The brothers entered the seminary together in 1946. Fr. Georg served the Church in Germany. His love of music paralleled his work in the Church and he is known as the conductor of the Cathedral Choir of Regensburg.  Fr. Joseph would become the Archbishop of Munich, Cardinal-Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and ascend to the Papacy. He was elected Pope Benedict XVI in 2005.  May Our Lady watch over Pope Emeritus Benedict and Fr. Georg as they celebrate this milestone in their service of The Lord.
