Letter from Sister Lucia confirmed Consecration of Russia was done

By Donal Anthony Foley –

Sister Lucia sent an important handwritten letter to Sister Mary of Bethlehem, dated August 29, 1989. The letter was in Portuguese and signed by Sister Lucia in her own handwriting. This letter is important because it affirms that the 1984 Consecration by Pope St. John Paul II had been made as Our Lady requested back in 1929.

The letter was translated and then published by Father Robert Fox in his Fatima Family Messenger magazine. He personally knew Sister Mary of Bethlehem, who had been with him on a visit to the Carmel in Coimbra where Sister Lucia was living at the time.

In the letter, Sister Lucia points out that the previous consecrations made by Popes Pius XII in 1942 and 1952; Paul VI in 1967; and John Paul II in 1982, were not fully efficacious, because they were not made in union with the bishops of the world. She also speaks of the “Consecration of the world, according to the request of Our Lady.”

In a commentary about this by Father Fox, according to Father Messias Coelho, SJ, a leading Portuguese theologian and authority on Fatima, Sister Lucia was speaking out of respect for the pope who used the word world, but included Russia by implication.

And, in fact, according to the then Bishop of Leiria-Fatima, Alberto Cosme do Amaral, John Paul II paused during the ceremony and did actually quietly include Russia in the consecration.

Also, in his commentary, Father Fox states, “In the letter the Pope sent to the world’s bishops, the Holy Father clarified that it was to renew both the consecration of the world (1942) and Russia (1952). This time he did so in union with the bishops.”

Later, in response to a specific question from Father Fox, Sister Lucia reaffirmed what she wrote in her letter. The following is an excerpt of a translation of her note, dated July 1, 1990, from the Portuguese:

“I come to answer your question, ‘If the consecration made by Pope John Paul II on March 25, 1984 in union with all the bishops of the world, accomplished the conditions for the conversion of Russia, according to the request of Our Lady in Tuy on June 13 of 1929’? Yes it was accomplished, and since then I have said that it was made. And I say that no other person responds for me, it is I who receive and open all letters and respond to them.”

What is Conversion of Russia?

So according to Sister Lucia, Pope John Paul II did indeed perform the Consecration as requested in 1984. But, then, we have to ask what exactly she understood by the expression “the conversion of Russia.”

As it happens, there is interesting evidence that tell us her views on this. She met with Cardinal Vidal of the Philippines in the early 1990s, and this meeting was recorded on video. Excerpts of this can be seen on a DVD entitled “Misterios De Fatima,” which was produced by a Portuguese TV company.

In this, she says: “The Holy Father has performed the Consecration—it is done. He did it in such a way that we are able to recognise it because he has fulfilled the missing conditions. … Our Lady said that Russia will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. Many will be martyred; the peoples/populations will be tormented. Some nations will be destroyed.

“In the end, after all this the Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me—but she did not say how—and Russia will be converted and an era of peace will be granted, but this was Our Lady’s way of referring to the wars and persecutions and mistakes that atheistic communism was causing throughout the world.

“The word conversion means a change – it does not mean that evil will disappear, but that there is a conversion from evil to good. That is what the word means.”

Certainly, something very significant happened with regard to the fall of Communism in Russia and Eastern Europe, which began soon after the 1984 Consecration, and which was vividly symbolized by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.  But although Our Lady promised the conversion of Russia with this consecration, she did not say that this would happen overnight. The conversion of Russia was also linked to the First Saturdays devotion in reparation to her Immaculate Heart, so until this devotion is more widely practiced in the Church, we can expect the conversion to be long and slow. In fact, Sister Lucia said the consecration was so that Russia could “get converted” but the practice of the First Saturdays was so that that conversion would be “more perfect.”

After all, the Resurrection of Christ did not suddenly convert the Roman Empire to Christianity. It took centuries to fully accomplish, and only after 300 years of intense persecution for the early Church. If it took that long to convert the Roman Empire, then it is unrealistic to expect quick results with regard to Russia’s conversion, especially given the degradation caused by Communism to that country over nearly seven decades.

There is no case in history of a large country converting without some sort of miraculous intervention, such as at Guadalupe, or intense missionary activity. Not only has there been no great public miracle in Russia to date, but the Catholic population there is tiny and there are few priests or missionaries available for evangelization. So its conversion will likely be a long, drawn out process, one which will require either a much larger Catholic presence in the country, or the renewal/conversion of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In comparison with the situation in the 1980s, however, there is freedom of religion in Russia, and thus it is up to individuals to be converted and to change. Fatima is a personal call to individual conversion for everyone, and that’s probably how we should expect the conversion of Russia to finally take place.

We are called to pray and sacrifice so that this will indeed come about. The best way we can do this is to promote the message of Fatima, pray the Rosary daily and especially, to practice the First Saturdays devotion.

  1. Is there an image of this letter?

The percentage of Russians who attend Church weekly is at 7%, which is the 3rd lowest in the world according to Pew Research. It was at 9% 10 years ago. I think this is a fairly obvious sign that Russia hasn’t been properly consecrated, along with its errors still being spread not around the world anymore, but encompassing the thought (since they already spread to the rest of the world).

    • The consecration was done 55 years after it’s request, and just as Jesus predicted to Lucia, “IT WILL BE DONE, BUT IT WILL BE LATE; RUSSIA WILL ALREADY HAVE SPREAD ITS ERRORS.”

But not enough people did their part – the FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION, which was the FIRST request of Our Lady. PRAYER, SACRIFICE, ROSARY. The point is, we are now having to live through a world in which communism had 55 years to spread its errors. Already in the 1930s, Pope Pius XI wrote an entire encyclical on how that was going to happen — through the education institutions, media, entertainment, subtle ways that no one would notice before it was too late. We need to pray to get through this. The Church can consecrate, and it has on numerous occasions, but the people have to respond to Our Lady’s requests too. Not enough have listened.

    • The entire country of Russia is now almost fully Eastern Orthodox christian. Countless churches have been open and countless cathedrals and the persecuted Eastern Orthodox church has been revived. something like 70% of young people now consider themselves devout Christians via Eastern Orthodoxy and alcoholism and suicide goes down each year. 71% of the Russian population now consider themselves active Eastern Orthodox Christians. it was fulfilled but just because it wasn’t fulfilled with Roman Catholicism does not mean it was not fulfilled because it was fulfilled via Eastern Orthodoxy. Please don’t be like the Jews who prayed for a messiah but when the messiah came they refused to accept that messiah and look for another. The prophecy was fulfilled through the Eastern Orthodox Church. The country is alive and beautiful with spirituality and love of the saints and Mary and Christ and communion and divine liturgies and parish life.

    • If Sister Lucia gas said that the Russia consecration has been fulfilled then as far as I am concerned then iy has .. Mary did not give us any details about how the consecration should be done except that it must be done in union with the Bishops of the world. Mary gave no objective summary of what a consecrated Russia would look like , but only that peace with the world would be the result. That has certainly been achieved

  2. if consecration was done then why is marcist communist socialism spread all over the world and in the church!!!!!!

    • Because it was done 55 years after the request was made, and just as Jesus predicted to Sister Lucia, “It WILL BE DONE, BUT IT WILL BE DONE LATE; RUSSIA WILL ALREADY HAVE SPREAD ITS ERRORS AROUND THE WORLD.” It was done late! And not enough lay people listened to what Our Lady wanted of them – namely the First Saturday devotion, which was the FIRST REQUEST. Prayer, Rosary, sacrifice. We all have a part in this.

      • You are sadly mistaken Barbara. That’s because you either don’t know or don’t understand other messages by Our Lord to Sr. Lucia. She asked him why he would not convert Russia without the consecration. “Because,” he said, ” I want my whole church to recognize that consecration as the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, so that later on that devotion (to the Immaculate Heart” would be placed next to devotion to my Sacred Heart.” So who is it that could place that devotion next to the Sacred Heart devotion? The Catholic Church! Has any pope or bishop issued a pastoral letter, encyclical or even mentioned that we should be practicing the First Saturday devotions or wearing the Brown Scapular? Never.
And most of all since the alleged JPII consecration of Russia that never mentioned Russia and was never joined PUBLICLY by any bishop, where is the peace? One would expect at least some cessation of evil. But since 1984 we have had codified into law in the U.S. the following: abortion through 9 months, homosexual “marriage,” adoption by homosexuals of children, the transgender mentally ill people being given special rights where parents can be arrested if a pervert goes into a restroom where their daughter is. If you call this peace you are grossly insulting Our Lady. When the consecration is really done, Russia’s Orthodox Church will rejoin Rome as the Russian Catholic Orthodox Church. I hope you think this over.

        • Our position is that of Sister Lucia’s. We will just have to disagree. It makes sense to us that Our Lord’s prediction that it would be done, but would be done late and Russia will have already spread its errors. When it was delayed 55 years, Russia had plenty of time to spread atheistic communism. The Church has placed the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary next to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. There is a great book by Timothy Tindal Robertson on all that happened in the Soviet Union after the consecration was made, and including how the Church began to place the two Hearts together. I suggest you read it: https://giftshop.wafusa.org/product/fatima-russia-and-pope-john-paul-ii/

    • Because it was done “LATE” as Jesus predicted to Sister Lucia. “It will be done, but it will be late; Russia will already have spread its errors throughout the world.” Communism had 55 years to spread its errors through our education system, our divorce and abortion culture, the media and entertainment. We just kept accepting all the little ways in which it chipped away at our morals. Catholics have accepted this.

      • But your problem is this: OK, according to you it was done 55 years too late. But you claim it was done in 1984 by JPII. The message from our lady is, that in the end her Immaculate Heart would triumph, the pope will consecrate Russia, and a period of peace would be granted to the world. Now consider please.; the 1984 event by JPII was 36 years ago. Once again Our Lady said, in the end etc, and a period of peace will be granted to the world. You are saying that 36 years after her request was granted by JPII, that’s not enough time to reverse or at least halt the errors of Russia. You seem to have a fixation with the 55 year thing. You seem to be like the Jehovah’s witnesses who when a traditional priest friend of mine corrects their ignorance of scripture they don’t get it. I don’t think you have a grasp of how bad things have become since JPII’s consecration of the world. It is illogical to say that because the consecration was done “55 years too late,” according to you, that means there will never be a realization of the promise; “In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph means perhaps a hundred years, or more? The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, which will be converted (to Catholicism BTW,) and a period of peace will be granted to mankind. And please, don’t retype the non-sensical mantra once again that Russia has had 55 years to spread its errors. For God is able to keep a promise no matter what the world’s current condition. This is (among others) the thing you don’t understand or don’t want to admit.

      • You are right. And I am scared of what is coming

    • Mary said nothing about Marxism in her request for the Conversion of Russia. Whilst Marxism and communism have links they are distinct categories. Communism is more about government control over the population. Marxism as it unfolds in the west is more about culture and Socialism is centralised in an economic paradigm. A country can be socialist without being Communist. This is also true more marxism. What is important is that Russia has had a major shift on its political landscape which has seen religious freedom restored once again to this great nation

  3. Nope, I’m not buying this. Our Lady said to say “Russia”, not “the world” and use the excuse of ‘intention’ of including Russia. Once the request has been put into motion by Heaven, we can’t change the rules to suit the political correctness of the world. Not even St. JP2 or Sister Lucia can do that.

The Catholic Church caved to communism long ago. Up to 1958, the Church had always openly condemned communism, but mysteriously stopped doing so. Not even in the Vactican II documents was it condemned. Why? Research the terms Metz Agreement. There is an article in Catholic World Report “Why Did Vatican II Ignore Communism” which is very interesting.

Study the history of the Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Margaret Mary Alacoquoe, the French Revolution, kings of France, Freemasonry…and the results of not doing what God asked of the French kings. If the trend continues, we have about nine years — June 2029 — before the day of reckoning.

    • And just like the King of France, Jesus told Lucia that it would be done, but would be done late; Russia will have already spread its errors. The consecration was delayed 55 years, so it was done late and we are now living through the spread of Russia’s errors. Sister Lucia said, and history tells us, that we avoided a nuclear war with the Soviet Union in 1985. They were preparing to strike our strategic defense systems in Europe, but three unexplained explosions happened that destroyed their nuclear fleet. This is historically factual. We highly recommend this book to you if you want to read some researched facts on this. Unfortunately, the consecration was done late, but we can thank God that Our Lady still intervened and continues to do so until we reach the promised Triumph of her Immaculate Heart. Of that we can be assured.

      • You are willfully ignorant! The emblem of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was placed on the French flag when, Barbara.?? You write,” just like the king of France, Jesus said it would be done;” so when was that emblem placed? Never. You can’t compare the two heavenly orders and use the same logic for both because by that logic the conversion of Russia will never take place. Are you with the apostolate? otherwise you would best “recuse” yourself from further comments here because you are woefully ignorant and seriously deluded, or your motives are not, shall we say, “Marian oriented!”

        • John, I’m taking the content directly from the appendix from Sister Lucia’s Memoirs: Fatima in the Lucia’s Own Words (pg. 198), from Fr. Apostoli’s book Fatima for Today, (pg. 168-169) and from the Documents on Fatima by Fr. Antonio Maria Martins, S.J. (pg. 324). They all say the same thing:

Sister Lucia wrote to her spiritual director, Rev. Fr. Jose Bernardo Goncalves, SJ on May 18, 1936, regarding the question of the consecration of Russia:
She noted that in an intimate communication, the Lord complained to her saying: “They did not heed my request! Like the King of France, they will repent and do it, but it will be late (in the Documents it says “too late). Russia will have already spread her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions of the Church: the Holy Father will have much to suffer.”

I will stand by the words of Sister Lucia from her own memoirs and the documents of her letters. If you have other, more credible sources, please share them. The Lord said it will be “too late.” We are now living through the dire consequences He foretold.

In the letter of May 18, 1936, Lucia writes about this further communication with the Lord: But my God, the Holy Father probably won’t believe me, unless You Yourself move him with a special inspiration.
“The Holy Father, pray very much for the Holy Father. He will do it, but it will be too late. Nevertheless, the Immaculate Heart of Mary will save Russia. It has been entrusted to her.”

Jacinta also said to Lucia before her death: Ask the Immaculate Heart of Mary for peace, it has been entrusted to her.”

Despite the failings of the Church and us laypeople to do what she asked, God gives us hope and keeps His promises. We must be devoted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, especially in praying the Rosary and doing the First Saturdays Communions of Reparation.

          Thank you for your correspondence.

          Barb Ernster

    • It all seems to be unfolding before our eyes.

      • Unfolding how? That all the world will be communist as predicted by Lucy? Were any of the consecrations with the intention to the Immaculate Heart of Mary? That would be a slap in the face to Orthodoxy as they do not believe in Mary’s role.

  4. Fr. Apostoli (R.I.P.) was a false friend of Fatima. Never trusted that man and neither should you.
All your sources are by questionable authors. Read other books by real scholars concerning Fatima. “False Friends of Fatima.” “The Fourth Secret of Fatima” by Antonio Socci. Books by Fr. Gruner…. You seem to pass yourself off as someone in authority. I don’t think you really have a clue about your lack of logic. BTW, the letter by Sr. Lucia that you harp on was shown to be a fake. by the Fatima Center. Also, the photo you post is fake because it is well known that all of Sr. Lucy’s correspondence was hand written. She never typed.

    • John, we will just have to disagree. I suspected you were a follower of Fr. Gruner. I’ve read the Fourth Secret of Fatima and I will stand with Sister Lucia’s words. We will just have to disagree.

  5. Oh you suspected I was a follower of Fr. Gruner! And who do you follow? Fr Fox?
Most likely Fox was one of Bella Dodd’s communist youth that she helped enter the seminary in order to damage the church.. Moreover, you are a fool and arrogant because you treat Fr. Gruner as if he was a criminal. Those of us who knew him realized he was a very holy man. Fox was not.

    • John, I’m only allowing your comment to be posted because it defines your disposition. The World Apostolate of Fatima does not support your comments about Fr. Fox, and there is no evidence to support these defamatory claims. Nor do we take a position on Fr. Gruner, who was known to publicly disparage our organization through many years. These things are all part of a history that many of us working for Our Lady today know little about. May we all work toward the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the salvation of souls. God bless you.

  6. Let us be at Peace. We have won and will continue to win. We children need not argue about details but only admit victory now and in the future. All will be completed. Do not fear.

If you read this, one hail mary for me please.

  7. It seems Our Lady’s explicit request was not followed. We are all, now, living witnesses of the errors of Communism which is now spreading in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic and WEF 2020 Great Reset.
