The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

September 14 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated in remembrance of both the day St. Helena discovered the True Cross in 320 and the 335 dedication of the basilica built on Calvary by Emperor Constantine. Guided to Christianity by her son, Emperor Constantine, St. Helena was tasked with uncovering Christian relics. To do so, she traveled to the Holy Land, where she had churches constructed in places such as the birthright of Jesus. Circa 120, Emperor Hadrian had a temple dedicated to the false god Venus constructed over the site of Christ’s death. When she arrived, St. Helena had it destroyed and excavated the area, which led to the discovery of three crosses. It is said that Helena had a dying woman brought to the crosses and place her hands on all three. When the woman touched the third cross, she was cured, leading St. Helena to declare that this was indeed the True Cross. Emperor Constantine had the Church of the Holy Sepulchre built on Calvary.
