Feast of St. Sebastian

January 20 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

To aid Christians being persecuted by the Romans, St. Sebastian became a Roman solider in 283 AD. He excelled at his job and rose in ranks, coming to serve in the Praetorian Guard that protected Emperor Diocletian.

Two twin brothers, Marcus and Marcellian, deacons of the Church, were imprisoned during St. Sebastian’s time as a Praetorian Guard. They refused to make sacrifices to the Roman gods and their parents visited them, pleading with the two brothers to renounce Christianity. However, St. Sebastian intervened, converting their parents to Christianity. He also converted other prominent people, including the local prefect.

Emperor Diocletian discovered St. Sebastian’s actions in 286 AD and had him ordered to death. St. Sebastian was tied to a stake and used as target practice for the archers. His body became as “full of arrows as an urchin” and yet, through by the grace of God, survived. Left by the archers, he was discovered by a woman named Irene, a Christian whose husband had been martyred. She cared for St. Sebastian until he regained his health.

Immediately after he was healed, St. Sebastian found Diocletian, revealing that he had survived. He publicly criticized the emperor, which lead to his death as he was beaten with clubs, and then tossed into the sewers. Lucina, a Christian woman, recovered his body and buried him beneath Rome in the catacombs.

Glorious Sebastian, martyr and saint,
I call on your strength and courage
to help me through this difficult trial.
Your faith was so deep,
a multitude of arrows could not finish you.
I ask for your intercession
that I may also survive that which threatens
to destroy my beliefs in the mercy of Christ.
