Feast of St. Mary Magdalene

July 22 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

On June 3, 2016, Pope Francis “raised the liturgical rank of the Memorial of Saint Mary Magdalene to a Feast, with the date remaining on July 22” (USCCB). Many people believe they know all there is to know about Mary Magdalene – that she was a prostitute saved by Jesus and that she is the sinful woman spoken of in Luke 7:36-50 who anointed the feet of Jesus. However, these are common misconceptions brought about by Western beliefs that have no scriptural evidence to support them.

Mary Magdalene was in fact a sinner. Yet it is through Mary Magdalene that we are taught that no one is too far past saving for Christ. In Luke 8:2, Jesus cast out “seven demons” from Mary Magdalene. After being saved, Mary Magdalene told other woman of what had happened, resulting in not only her own conversion, but theirs as well.

She was one of the few that remained with Christ during His agony on the Cross. Called the “Apostle to the Apostles” by St. Thomas Aquinas, Mary Magdalene is one of the most honored women in the Bible as she witnessed the Resurrection of Christ., having found his tomb empty.  It was she that informed the Apostles that Christ had risen on His behalf.

Prayer to St. Mary Magdalene

Saint Mary Magdalene,
woman of many sins, who by conversion
became the beloved of Jesus,
thank you for your witness
that Jesus forgives
through the miracle of love.

You, who already possess eternal happiness
in His glorious presence,
please intercede for me, so that some day
I may share in the same everlasting joy.
