Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist

October 18 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

St. Luke,  most likely a convert from paganism, wrote two books in the New Testament, the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. As a physician, he accompanied St. Paul in spreading the Gospel and remained a faithful companion until Paul’s martyrdom.

From Antioch, which was one of the first cities of early Christianity, Luke was one of the most cultured members of the Church between his speaking Greek and being a physician. He is ranked as one of the top historians from his time. His accounts of Christ’s life and the apostles’ missionary journeys are among the most accurate and detailed ones in existence.

St. Luke was the only evangelist to include the personal testimony of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her role in Christ’s life becomes more defined in his Gospel. Credited as the  founder of Christian iconography, there are numerous icons depicting the Virgin Mary that are attributed to him, including the “Salvation of the Roman People” which to this day is in the Basilica of St. Mary Major. Because of this, St. Luke is the patron of artists.

After Paul’s martyrdom, it is believed that St. Luke continued his preaching throughout the Mediterranean, and that his life ended in martyrdom. However, as there are no first hand accounts, there is no certain confirmation as to how he died.

Almighty God, you inspired Your servant St. Luke the Evangelist and Physician to set forth in the gospel the love and the healing power of your Son. In faithfully detailing the humanity of Jesus, he also showed the divinity of Jesus and His genuine compassion for all human beings.

May St. Luke intercede for us that we may deepen our understanding of the gospel and grow in compassion of Jesus. May his intercession enable our new parish to follow Your way and plan for us.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
