Feast of St. Leo the Great

November 10 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

The papacy of St. Leo the Great is perhaps one of the most renown in Catholicism. In 440, in a quick manner which demonstrates the respect Leo had garnered, he was elected to succeed Pope Sixtus III. Being pope was viewed as a blessed privilege by Leo, who dedicated himself to being Peter’s successor. St. Leo the Great is regarded as one of the most influential popes of the ancient Church. In 1754, St. Leo I was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XIV.

Pope Leo I played a crucial role in opposing heresies rising during the time. They included: Pelagianism which believed humans can perfect themselves without God’s assistance and denied Original Sin and Manichaeism, which denied any goodness in relation to the human body or any creations.

Combating heresies was not the only difficulty facing the Church. During this time, Eastern Christians started questioning the Church’s teaching about Jesus’ humanity and divinity, and if the Church’s current practice was the best way to discuss it. St. Leo responded to this doctrinal controversy with a letter, which established the Church’s official teaching on Jesus Christ as One Person with a human and divine nature which couldn’t be separated. His letter is still praised today for preserving the Christian truth.

His sermons were profound, and aided in his recognition as one of the greatest popes in history. There are nearly 100 of his sermons and 150 of his letters that are preserved to this day.

Prayer for the Intercession of St. Leo the Great

God our Father,
you will never allow the powers of hell
to prevail against your Church,
founded on the rock of the apostle Peter.
Let the prayers of Pope Leo the Great
keep us faithful to your truth
and secure in your peace.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
