Feast of St. James the Apostle

July 25 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Today we celebrate the feast of St. James the Apostle, also known as St. James the Great, so as to distinguish him from St. James the Less, another of the Lord’s twelve disciples. Often mentioned throughout the Bible with his brother, St. John, and St. Peter, St. James was present for the Transfiguration as well as Christ’s Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.

St. James, like the other apostles, traveled and preached about Jesus and His message. Around 44 A.D., St. James was ordered to be beheaded by Herod Agrippa, making him the first of the twelve disciples to become a martyr. As early as the ninth century, St. James has been buried in Galicia, Spain. During Medieval times, the Santiago de Compostela was the third most traveled pilgrimage, placing behind Rome and Jerusalem. It remains a popular pilgrimage today.

Prayer to St. James the Apostle

O glorious Apostle, Saint James,
who by reason of thy fervent and generous heart
was chosen by Jesus to be witness of His glory on Mount Tabor,
and of His agony in Gethsemane;
thou, whose very name is a symbol of warfare and victory;
obtain for us strength and consolation
in the unending warfare of this life,
that, having constantly and generously followed Jesus,
we may be victors in the strife and deserve to receive
the victor’s crown in heaven.
