Feast of St. Bridget of Sweden

July 23 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

At the young age of ten, St. Bridget of Sweden had her first vision of Jesus on His cross, The Man of Sorrows. When she asked Him who had done this to Him, Jesus responded, “Those who despise me and refuse my love for them.” After her first vision., St. Bridget vowed to try and stop people from offending Christ.

St. Bridget was 14 years old when she married Ulf, an 18 year old man who also had a strong devotion to God. Together they had eight children, St. Catherine of Sweden included among them. For work, both St. Bridget and Ulf served the Swedish Court. In her position as the Queen’s maid, St. Bridget tried to convince the King and Queen to abandon their sinful ways and live better lives, however, they did not adhere.

For the remainder of her life, St. Bridget continued to have visions of Christ. Receiving special messages from God, St. Bridget often traveled to relay these messages to the important rulers and people in the Church with whom the messages concerned.

After the death of Ulf, St. Bridget gave up all of her wealth and willingly entered a life of poverty. She began the order of the Most Holy Savior (the Bridgittines) in 1346. Not long before her death, she pilgrimaged to the Holy Land, seeing visions of Jesus along the way. On July 23, 1373, St. Bridget died in Rome and was canonized by Pope Boniface IX in 1391.

Prayer of St. Bridget of Sweden

O Jesus! True liberty of angels, Paradise of delights, remember the horror and sadness which Thou didst endure when Thy enemies, like furious lions, surrounded Thee, and by thousands of insults, spits, blows, lacerations and other unheard-of-cruelties, tormented Thee at will. In consideration of these torments and insulting words, I beseech Thee, O my Savior, to deliver me from all my enemies, visible and invisible, and to bring me, under Thy protection, to the perfection of eternal salvation. Amen.
