Feast of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

July 14 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

The first Native American to be a recognized saint by the Catholic Church, Kateri Teakwitha was the daughter of a captured Algonquin whom was forced to marry the chief of the Mohawk clan. When she was just four, Kateri lost her entire family to smallpox and became severely scarred herself. Adopted by her uncle who became the new chief of the Mowhawks, Kateri, although inspired by what Jesuit missionaries had to say, was kept from seeking their instruction for fear of her uncle. While her uncle tried to get her to marry different men, she refused. When she was finally converted to Catholicism, she took the name Kateri, which is the Mohawk form of Catherine.

Her conversion was not accepted by her people so advised by a priest, Kateri left and took a 200 mile journey to a Christian Indian village in Sault St. Louis, right outside of Montreal. Here she prayed for countless hours and took a vow of chastity, thus growing her relationship with God. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha also practiced intense fasting, offering her suffering for the conversion of her people. She passed away at age 24 in 1680. Saint Kateri Tekawitha was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II and canonized in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI.

Prayer to the Lily of the Mohawks

Blessed Kateri, you are revered as the mystic of the American wilderness. Though orphaned at the age of four,
and left with a scarred face and
damaged eyesight from illness,
you were esteemed among the Mohawk tribe.
When you asked to be baptized a Christian,
you subjected yourself
to abuse by your people
and were forced to run away.
You endured may trials but
still flowered in prayer and holiness,
dedicating yourself totally to Christ.
I ask you to be my spiritual guide
along my journey through life.
Through your intercession,
I pray that I may always be
loyal to my faith in all things.
Amen.
