Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel

July 16 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm

Rosary/Confessions – 11:30 AM

Holy Mass – 12 PM

Scapular Enrollment after Mass.

Mount Carmel is where the prophet Elijah dwelt, praying for the salvation of Israel from a drought. Multiple times Elijah servant his servant up the mountain to check for signs of rain. On the seventh time, he was given the good news that a little cloud had risen from the sea. Soon after, Israel and its people were saved by torrential downpours.

As prophesied by Isaiah, Elijah understood the little cloud to be a sign of the Virgin. At the time, there were hermits living on Mount Carmel who followed Elijah and prayed for the awaited the Virgin, thus tracing the origin on the Carmelite Order back to the prophet Elijah.

It was St. Simon Stock’s arrival to Mount Carmel in the 13th century that brought protection to the Carmelites and gave us the devotion of the Brown Scapular. Knelt in prayer on July 16th, 1251, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock and, giving him the Brown Scapular, said: “Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and the Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire…It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace.”

Sabbatine Privilege

In 1322, Pope John XXII said the Blessed Virgin said to him in a Vision: “I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life.”

The Sabbatine Privilege has three conditions that must be fulfilled in order to obtain the benefits of the Privilege and the Scapular:

  1. Wear the Brown Scapular
  2. Observe chastity according to one’s state in life
  3. Pray the Rosary

It is necessary to be enrolled in the Brown Scapular in order to receive the spiritual blessings associated with the Scapular, which you can do after our Holy Mass on this Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
