Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle

September 21 @ 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Similar to Jesus’s other disciples, little is known about St. Matthew’s life besides what is chronicled in his Gospel. Before he was one of Christ’s disciples, Matthew was a publican, Jewish tax-collectors who worked for the Roman rulers and were despised for turning their backs on their own people as well as taking more money than required to pocket for themselves. It may appear shocking that Jesus would choose such a man as one of his apostles, and yet, it aligns with His teachings about love, forgiveness, and redemption.

The Gospel of Matthew recounts his interactions with Jesus In it, Matthew tells how when the Lord passed and called him to follow, he did so. It raised questions among the Jewish people as to why the Messiah would dine with a sinner such as Matthew, to which the Lord responded: “I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”

St. Matthew was present at Christ’s resurrection and accession into heaven. In his Gospel he shares Jesus’s message: “go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

Just as little is know about his beginnings before Christ, little is known about his life afterwards. Traditionally we are taught that he died a martyr while spreading the Gospel.

A Prayer to God, Help Us to Follow St. Matthew’s Example

We thank thee, heavenly Father, for the witness of thine Apostle and evangelist Matthew to the Gospel of thy Son our Savior; and we pray that, after his example, we may with ready wills and hearts obey the calling of our Lord to follow him; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever, Amen.
