How the August apparition changed the Fatima children

By Barb Ernster –
The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is a great time to start practicing the First Saturdays devotion if you have not already made this commitment. This devotion consoles Our Lady, draws you into her Immaculate Heart and brings about graces necessary for the salvation of souls.
The August apparition at Fatima is worthy of our reflection on the deeper meaning of devotion to the Immaculate Heart. It was a significant turning point in the lives of the three Fatima shepherds and their call to holiness.
By now, the children had seen the vision of hell and understood the seriousness of this mission of prayer and sacrifice. Our Lady reminded them on August 19, when the actual apparition occurred: “Pray, pray very much and make sacrifices for sinners, for so many souls go to hell because there are none to sacrifice themselves and pray for them.”
But what else happened in August?
The children had been kidnapped by the local mayor and held prisoner in his administrative office on August 13, the day of the appointed apparition. And while imprisoned, they were pressured to recant their story or be boiled in oil. The children refused; they were not going to lie even if they had to die.
What did the children do that day?
Like the Apostle St. John, they were called to the crown of martyrdom, they accepted martyrdom, but they were not asked to fulfill it.  Instead, they were set free and called to carry out their mission differently, but this is when the children began to feel the heavy cross of the mission. Up to this point, they had been praying and offering sacrifices, but now they were asked to give their very lives as a sacrifice, like Jesus. This is the point when they stood up and said, “yes” to all that God was asking of them, much like when Mary said, “Be it done unto me according to thy word.”
With this holy resolve, the children were indifferent to all that was going on around them, including the unbelief of family members, the threats of government officials, the uncertainty of how things would unfold. They focused entirely on being obedient to God’s Will through the message of the beautiful Lady.
Can we do the same? Are we willing to live this message wholeheartedly, indifferent to what is going on around us,  unattached to the world, fully trusting in Jesus, to the point of maybe being asked to give our lives? Our practice of the First Saturdays is the least we can offer as a sign of our obedience and willingness to sacrifice.
As we reflect on the August apparition, let us ask Our Lady to help us imitate Lucia, St. Jacinta and St. Francisco in living fully the mission of Fatima.
